Searching for purpose

God has a dynamic purpose and plan for your life!

God has a great and glorious purpose and plan for every human being, and also for your life! That's why He created you! God created you with a very specific purpose and plan in mind, and He implanted a desire in every human being's inner being to find your purpose in life.

This is why all human beings on earth seek our purpose in life when we grow up. We are made that way! The day you left school or college, you had to make one of the most important decisions in life, namely, 'what am I going to do with my life?'!

Uncertainty of purpose
There is a common misconception among people that the most important thing in life is to 'make a living'. In other words, I need to have a job or occupation through which I can earn an income so that I can live comfortably and take care of my wife and children. We think that when we reach this goal, our lives will be fulfilled. Wrong! Let me tell you right at the beginning -- this is a misrepresentation and a deception -- and if this is the primary motive behind your job or profession, I can guarantee you are on the path to a wrong purpose! Jesus said in Matthew 6: 25-33: "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? ... For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." The world does not take these words of Jesus seriously -- instead, the world's wisdom is: 'Seek first your own interests, wants and rights, and the kingdom of God will be added to you'.

The truth is that there is an empty and unfulfilled void in every human being's life, which can only be filled by God and will continue until we find our Divine purpose!

There is a chunk of unfulfillment and incompleteness in every person's life -- no matter how educated, gifted, prosperous or successful you are -- until you find God's perfect purpose and calling for your life!

God made us that way, and unless we earnestly seek our Divine purpose and calling, our lives will remain unfulfilled and incomplete — no matter how educated, successful, or prosperous we may be in life!

The greatest tragedy

The greatest tragedy in life is to miss God's purpose for your life!

How tragic to see multitudes of people across all walks of life -- rich and poor, young and old -- on the garbage dump of unfulfilled purposes. People grab at every straw in their search for meaning and fulfillment. Some indulge in music, pleasure, sports, work, education, positive thinking, psychology, the internet or money for fulfillment; while others go further and resort to alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex and crime -- only to find that none of these things can bring true and lasting fulfillment!

Lasting fulfillment in life always goes hand in hand with Divine purpose -- not personal dreams!

In order to find true fulfillment in life, you must find God's purpose and calling for your life! If your personal dreams and your Divine purpose are in conflict with each other -- and by nature they are! -- you will never achieve your true purpose! You will die an unfulfilled person -- no matter how educated, rich or prosperous you are! Apart from my personal experience, I can tell you about many true stories I have read, but also of people I have personally known!

Many people confuse calling with a profession or career. What is the difference? A career is the job or profession you have chosen for yourself based on your assessment of your personal talents, abilities and affinities. A calling is the job or profession God has planned for you according to His purpose, and wants to equip, qualify and use you for -- from your mother's womb! Every human being has a Divine calling -- not only pastors, missionaries and some others! However, this does not mean that if you have a passion for a certain profession that it is necessarily God's calling for your life!

The test is -- do you know for sure that you are in the center of God's will for your life? If you are standing only in a profession, your focus will be on life here on earth and temporal things -- if you are in God's calling for your life your focus will be on heavenly and eternal things, even though you are doing a secular work.

How do you know what God's will, purpose and calling are for your life?

How to know God's purpose
When I speak of God's purpose and calling for your life, I mean as it is revealed to us in the Bible. You will notice that I place a high premium on the Bible as the infallible Word of God. Do not pay attention to what you read, see and hear in the media about some downgrading the Bible to a fallible human book. I can prove the opposite to you, but this is a subject on its own. Believe me, you can trust the Bible as the infallible Word of God!

In order to find God's will, purpose, and calling for your personal life, you must first understand God's purpose and plan in creation as a whole! Why did God create the earth and humanity? Why did God create you? In order to answer these questions, you have to understand The Fundamental And Central Message Of The Bible. In this article I answer the above questions in detail. You can read the article by following the link. However, let my summarise God's purpose and plan in creation for you here.

God's purpose in creation and for the Church is to produce an offspring for God and a Bride for His Son in His own image from every nation, tribe and tongue, to rule with Him over creation in eternity. This purpose and plan will be fulfilled with the return of Jesus Christ and the Marriage of the Lamb.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ -- His death on the Cross and resurrection from the dead is the central point of the ENTIRE history of the world and is the center of God's plan for the world. Paul Billheimer describes this beautifully as follows: "The universe, including this planet, was created for one purpose: to provide a suitable habitation for the human race. The human race was created in the image and likeness of God for one purpose: to provide an eternal companion for the Son. After the fall and promise of redemption through the coming Messiah, the Messianic race was born and nurtured to bring in the Messiah. And the Messiah came for one intent and only one: to give birth to His Church, thus obtaining His Bride. The Church, then —  the called out body of redeemed mankind  —  turns out to be the central object, the goal, not only of mundane history but of all that God has been doing in all realms, from all eternity." *

This eternal purpose and plan of God for the world, of which the Cross of Calvary is the central point, will reach its fulfilment with the return of Jesus Christ.

When will Jesus Christ return?

When will Jesus Christ return?
The Biblical prophecies of Jesus Christ's return are being fulfilled at a rapid pace before our eyes and it must be clear to all end-time watching Christians that Jesus' return is very near. We are undoubtedly living in the last of the last days and if you still want to argue about this, I would advise you to rather focus on finding God's purpose for your life!

It is impossible to live a Divine purpose-driven life without a focus on Jesus Christ's return. The return of Jesus Christ is the climax and fulfillment of every Christian's deepest longing and highest expectation, pursuit, and purpose –– but also the greatest failure, tragedy, and disaster for everyone who is unprepared for eternity! The return of Jesus Christ is the entrance into eternity -- for some unto eternal death, for those who are prepared unto eternal life!
I want to challenge you with the question, if you know that God's plan in creation and for the world is in its final moments and Jesus Christ's return is just around the corner -- how would you occupy yourself for the rest of your earthly life? What will be your life goals? What will be your earthly pursuits? How will it change your values and priorities?

What is God's primary purpose and plan for your life?

I know what you really want to know is what is God's purpose and plan for your job and career, your future spouse and marriage, your home and family, your finances, your battles, problems, crises and all the choices you have to make regarding your earthly life. However, these things are included, and will fall into place once you have found God's primary purpose and plan for your life.

Do you remember the verses in Matthew 6: 25-33 we have quoted earlier? Jesus said,  "... seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."  (Emphasis my own.) The Lord does not answer prayers that fall outside the framework of His primary purpose and plan (or the will of God) for man's life!

You might be wondering why then it seems like some people are so prosperous even though they are living with no eternal focus? There are two answers to this question in particular. The first is recorded for us in Psalm 73. We read in Psalm 73: 1-3 and 17: "Truly God is good to Israel, To such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ... Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end. (Emphasis my own.) Another important answer is that God judges man's heart and surrenders him to his own errors and foolish desires when he does not seek after God's will with a sincere heart. It is written in Romans 1: 22-24:  "Professing to be wise, they became fools, ... Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, ..."  (Emphasis mine.) May God forbid that this is anyone's fate reading this article!

The will of God is not something high and foreign, beyond the reach of human understanding! The will of God is simply His revealed purpose and plan for every human being -- also for you! If it is so simple, what then is God's primary purpose and plan for your life?

When one studies the whole Bible and understands God's purpose in creation as we have summarised above, the complete Bible picture falls into place and God's purpose and plan for every person becomes crystal clear. God has a threefold primary purpose and plan for every person on earth -- also for you. This is called the Gospel. This threefold purpose and plan are the following:

  • Appropriating the Gospel -- To make you a child of God. To fulfill His purpose in creation in you by making you a member of God's offspring, family, heavenly citizenship and Kingdom. This is called salvation or redemption and comes through regeneration.
  • Implementing the Gospel -- To qualify you for eternity. To restore the image of God in you that was lost through the fall, and to prepare and qualify you for your heavenly citizenship, task and leadership in His Kingdom. This involves sanctification, deliverance from, and to be set free from the bondage of sin and the world; and living a victorious Christian life.
  • Fulfilling the Gospel -- To use you here on earth. To equip and empower you to represent God and be His instrument, by helping to fulfill His purpose in creation here on earth through your witness, co-working with God to populate heaven and to implement His plan and purpose for the world in anticipation of Jesus Christ's return. This involves being available and fruitful in service for God.
Let there be no doubt in your mind –– unless ALL THREE of the above Divine purposes come to fruition in your life, you will die an unfulfilled and incomplete person, for God has created you to find true fulfillment and satisfaction only within God's complete purpose and plan for your life!

Only ONE question now remains, namely, HOW can you find and live the above three Divine goals for your life? I address each of these goals separately on the following pages. Please follow the link below to the next subject.
